Important Notes:
Traditional Japanese chisels are crafted from high-carbon steel, renowned for their edge retention. However, this steel is significantly more brittle than most western alternatives and is prone to rust. Maintain these tools carefully and apply vegetable oil after each use.
Preparation Instructions:
Before first use, these chisels, like most traditional Japanese chisels, require proper preparation – specifically, setting the metal retention hoop at the handle’s end. This hoop reinforces and prevents handle splitting. Position the hoop so the wooden handle protrudes approximately 1mm above it, ensuring hammer strikes contact the wood. With continued use, a desired “mushroom head” formation will develop on the metal hoop.
Note on Variations:
Individual chisel lengths and handle wood grain patterns may vary slightly from descriptions and photographs. These variations do not affect quality but rather contribute to each tool’s unique character.
