Description
Single-Edged Shears • Kuroco • 180 mm
- Thin and pointed blades – easy access to branches, even in very dense areas.
- Light spring action – significantly reduced opening width and low resistance. Doesn’t tire the wrists.
The KUROCO tool series represents top-tier pruning tools that have already garnered numerous awards in Japan and are quickly becoming the gold standard among professional gardeners.
- Handcrafted following deep-rooted blacksmithing traditions at the Yoshioka Edged-Toolworks forge in Ono, Japan.
- Blades are made from high-quality carbon steel (Aogami).
Important: This tool is designed for pruning branches up to 7 mm thick. For bigger branches, we recommend choosing curved secateurs, a pruning saw, or loppers (two-handed shears).
Why Single-Edged?
The most common problem when working with standard straight-blade garden shears is their fragility. They cut flowers perfectly, but often “give up” when encountering a thicker twig. Then you have to grab secateurs, but they are often too big and awkward to use in dense plant areas.
Usually, straight shears have symmetrical blades – cutting happens with both blades closing. Meanwhile, secateurs work differently: one blade acts as a support (anvil), and only the second one, sharpened at an acute angle, performs the cut. Yoshioka forge created an innovative product combining both these worlds.
These shears operate on the secateur principle: one blade is blunter and acts as a stable support, while the other – extremely sharp and pointed – performs the cut.
It feels like working with “surgically” precise scissors, but the cutting power is closer to that of secateurs.

Maintenance:
Handmade Japanese shears feature an ergonomic design, smooth operation, and long-lasting sharpness. The blade however is made from traditional carbon steel, very hard but also brittle (more brittle than most people are used to) and rusting. Therefore take good care of this tool, don’t abuse it by cutting wires, dry branches and such.
After use, we advise cleaning the blades and coating them with plant-based oil. Store the shears in a dry place. If rust or other residue forms, you can use products from our steel care kit.
