A unique type of footwear from Japan – Jika Tabi

Historically, split-toe shoes were made of leather thin enough to be worn like socks. Over time, changing fashion and new manufacturing technologies evolved this design into modern versions of Jika-Tabi. One such version is a cotton boot with a non-slip rubber sole, which is still widely used in Japan by gardeners and construction workers as standard work footwear.

Although this seems contrary to how a work boot is perceived in the West (bulky, waterproof, stiff), the Japanese prefer comfort, flexibility, and a close connection to the ground.

It is difficult to describe the sensation of walking in Jika-Tabi, but we promise they will be the most interesting (in a good way) shoes you have ever worn.
